Wise Women celebrate International Women's Day

6pm - 8pm 8 March 2012

Featuring fabric sculptures, art dolls and mixed media art by local textile artist Wilma Simmons, this vibrant textile art exhibition will also include the art created by participants in the series of workshops “ The Getting of Widsom” offered by the gallery.

As International Women’s Day is also known as United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace, this exhibition promotes the idea of  ‘togetherness and harmony’ with a series of connecting art dolls around the skirting boards of the gallery.

This wonderful exhibition not only highlights the talents of textiles artists in the Hunter, but also recognises and supports the needs of others in this community. The art dolls , created by textile artist friends and groups like NCEATA (Newcastle Creative Embroiderers and Textile Artists) , have been donated for auction. All money raised will be donated to Penola House to assist with educational programs for refugee women in the Hunter.

Describing the exhibition, Wilma Simmons  said, “ For the Wise Wome n’  exhibition, I have created art dolls to acknowledge the achievements of women worldwide and to celebrate the great privilege it is to be a woman living in Australia in the 21st century. Many of the sculpted works include birds, based on a mythical belief that learning the language of birds is a step towards achieving wisdom. I have been inspired by my Asian heritage and images of some of my female ancestors appear in my current mixed media work. However, I am most excited about the inclusion of the creations of  ‘students’  from my workshops in the exhibtion and the generous donations of work by other textile artists to support programs for local refugee women because, for me, the best part of making art is empowering others .”

The Wise Women Exhibition will be officially opened by Gloria McKinnon, well known textile artist, quilter and emrboiderer and owner of Anne’s Glory Box, on Thursday 8 March 6pm - 8pm

and  will remain open until 25 March.
